De bergen data van OLX

Door een combinatie van organische groei en acquisitie is OLX wereldwijd het grootste online advertentieplatform geworden, waarop particulieren hun tweedehandsgoederen verkopen aan andere particulieren. Of diensten aanbieden. Of hun huis te koop zetten. Dankzij de nieuwste in-house ontwikkelde technologie kunnen alle zoekhandelingen en transacties van gebruikers realtime gevolgd worden. Als gevolg daarvan is de hoeveelheid beschikbare data enorm. Denk daarbij aan honderden tetrabytes, waaruit een schat aan informatie te herleiden valt, direct toepasbare informatie bij voorkeur, waarmee gezorgd kan worden voor een zo relevant mogelijke, gepersonaliseerde en gebruiksvriendelijke ervaring.

Dit is nog zo goed als onontgonnen terrein, dat aan de kern van het bedrijf raakt. Er zal een nieuw team van tien personen worden samengesteld dat zich gaat bezighouden met ‘Search & Relevancy”. De spil van dat team zal worden gevormd door twee data scientists. Die zullen op basis van de gedragsgegevens van 300 miljoen OLX-gebruikers wereldwijd algoritmen ontwikkelen voor zelflerende systemen waarmee iedere gebruiker afzonderlijk verrast zal worden met een op zijn of haar toegesneden benadering bij het gebruik van OLX. Het spreekt voor zich dat dit alleen de besten zal lukken.

Neem Peter. Als hij naar de OLX-app gaat (of de website), moet de feed die hij te zien krijgt op hem toegespitst zijn. En alleen op hem. Nog voordat Peter begint te zoeken naar een drumstel of een opblaasbadje, weet OLX al wat hij graag te zien wil krijgen. Bij OLX beschikken ze immers over zijn zoekgeschiedenis en hun eigen advertentiestatistieken, ze stellen hem vragen, kennen zijn Facebookprofiel en hebben veel context. Met behulp van zelflerende systemen kan de data scientist voorspellen wat Peter graag in zijn feed wil zien. Dus wanneer Peter begint met zoeken, geeft OLX hem relevante zoekresultaten, bijvoorbeeld omdat de verkoper bij hem in de buurt woont of altijd snel reageert rond die tijd of andere artikelen te koop heeft staan waarvan bekend is dat Peter daarin geïnteresseerd is. Of om andere redenen. En de data scientist probeert uit te zoeken wat die andere redenen zouden kunnen zijn.

Wat doet een data scientist dus bij OLX? Om te beginnen formuleert hij/zij de juiste vragen. De volgende stap is het analyseren van miljarden gegevens, het ontwikkelen van predictive models, het optimaliseren van algoritmen en het maken van deep-dive analyses om deze vragen te beantwoorden. Een algoritmeverbetering van 10% kan in deze branche direct een 10% hogere netto-opbrengst betekenen. Data scientists zijn verantwoordelijk voor het identificeren van de kernproblemen op het gebied van voorspelling/classificatie en het bedenken van innovatieve oplossingen. The objective

Het team

Vacature: Senior Data Engineer

Het raw tracking data volume van OLX stijgt in een tempo dat alleen door de meest geavanceerde technologie bij kan worden gehouden (vandaag150 terabytes, 20 miljard row tables). Alleen de knapste koppen kunnen dergelijke technologie effectief toepassen. Zeven Redshift clusters bewaren de enorme hoeveelheden data die OLX vertellen wie hun gebruikers zijn en welke van de meer dan 3000 marketing- of product-uitingen hen het beste zou dienen.

Soort werk

Innoveren. Uitrollen. De groei bijhouden. Daar zal de belangrijkste focus liggen van de Senior Data Engineer (Redshift). Aanbevelingen en sort-order-processen zijn operationeel op de OLX-platforms, maar zullen op het gebied van personalisatie profiteren van verdere data-engineering. Ook zijn er ideeën nodig om het verdienmodel verder te ontwikkelen. Met beperkte data-engineering-capaciteit in de verschillende landen zal de Senior Engineer zorgen voor verdere lokale implementatie van de push- en e-mail-campagnes met oog op het behoud van de structuur en de schaalbaarheid van de architectuur. Een zeer heldere SQL-code is cruciaal. Tegelijkertijd moet een Senior Data Engineer in het bezit zijn van voldoende soft skills om een interculturele omgeving te kunnen managen.

Een technisch genie in data-warehousing zou geweldig zijn, maar de Senior Data Engineer (Redshift) moet zich ook thuis voelen in de online advertentie markt. Met minstens 4 jaar ervaring met data engineering in snel veranderende, klantgerichte omgevingen moeten kandidaten in staat zijn de ene dag in de code te duiken en de andere dag ideeën te presenteren op de werkvloer.

They will go beyond C2C trading and attract Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) to the platform as well. This requires a different approach, so the product will be tailored to the verticals’ needs. Type of work

OLX is sitting on potential goldmines in named regions: the horizontal umbrella contains numbers of listings in cars and real estate categories that verticalized competitors can only dream of. So, the Vertical General Manager won’t start from scratch, but does have a long road ahead. Developing a vertical means stretching between developing high level strategy and interacting with SME’s on their work floors, and everything in between. The GM will lead and expand a dedicated team. In most geographies, the primary sales force is already in place. The GM will be held accountable for disrupting the status quo as well as building a business. Only a visionary with a good sense of both sales and product can succeed here. Depending on the area, the GM will report to the Country Manager or Regional CEO, with a dotted line to the Global Verticals Director.

Requirements

People can’t be expected to disrupt something they don’t know. Therefore, these positions are only open to professionals with a solid track record in online classifieds or marketplaces. Senior Business Managers whose careers feature involvement in strategy, commerce, product and a solid foundation in analytical thinking. The Head of Customer Insights’ work will materially steer business strategies, product roadmap, growth initiatives, customer services procedures, and especially pricing and sales strategies. This position will be in the center of it all.

Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates need a broad research repertoire including data analysis in large volume environments, preferably online B2C. They know their way around data warehouses and A/B-testing, but also see the big (commercial) picture. In terms of UX, they are apt at interviewing and designing questionnaires that reach the core of the matter. Equally important is a strong set of people skills: the right candidate will be a culturally sensitive team manager. Previous experience in (or heritage from) South-East Asia is probably advantageous.

The implementation manager

There is a rotation opportunity available within the global CLM team. The Implementation Manager will spend a number of months “shadowing” the current director of the team, Dobo Radichkov. After this initial stage, the Implementation Manager will take over this role and lead the team further. The global CLM team is very well regarded at all levels in the organization. Naspers’ long term strategy has allowed them to do things in the right order: build your reach before trying to monetize it. Focus on the quality of customer experience before charging your service. And make sure that you have absolute market share, ruling out the competition. That’s where you’ll get pricing power. In many of the markets that OLX is active the moment to monetize is rapidly approaching. Not because Naspers has to, but because they can. Now the challenge lies in monetizing in the right way. Refrain from any type of monetization that would damage your product experience. There are careful considerations to be made. Sometimes it’s better to size the monetization potential to justify investments rather than actually monetizing a revenue stream too soon. It’s better to earn a billion tomorrow than a million today.

Locations

OLX has regional hubs that offer innovation support to country operations. These regional hubs are located in Buenos Aires (Latin America), Dubai (EMEA), Cape Town (Sub Saharan Africa), Jakarta/Manila (South East Asia), Delhi (South Asia) and Berlin/Lisbon (Europe). With topics as fresh as Monetization, there will be an intensive cooperation and sharing of best practices between the regions. This role can either be part of the GLG and rotate amongst these locations or be filled with a permanent hire fixed to one of the locations.

Type of work

The level of maturity of monetization differs per market, and so does the type of work. In a greenfield market, much of the focus will be on scoping and prioritizing. Doing the proper analytical and go-to-market strategy work to decide where to start. Investigating revenue potential of different streams of monetization (e.g. advertising, paid listings and premium listings). Coordinating the product teams in creating new functionality, researching the acceptance of different types of payment. And of course: marketing. These new features have to be introduced to the public in a highly compelling way.

Candidate profile

Due to the abstract and analytical nature of the position it is an excellent entry position for a strategy consultant. Ideally with a bit of experience in an e-commerce domain, which will make him/her used to the ambiguous dynamics of this pioneering industry. Leadership qualities are important, as you will be shaping new teams and bringing different teams together in their new monetary purpose.
