Postcode Lottery Group Background

Shortly after World War II, the concept of lotteries with a social spending mission was frequently used in the Netherlands: various organizations raised funds through lotteries for reconstruction efforts. In 1961, these initiatives united to form a formal ‘charity lottery,’ and nearly thirty years later, in 1989, former employees of Novib founded the Nationale Postcode Loterij.

The Nationale Postcode Loterij gained fame through TV commercials, the well-known envelopes on doorsteps, and TV shows like Miljoenenjacht. Participating is fun and can change the lives of an individual or an entire street. Meanwhile, it also makes the world a better place, as the proceeds are donated to charities for people and nature. By 2024, the Nationale Postcode Loterij has managed to involve a large part of Dutch households in contributing financially to good causes through a commercial approach. Since its inception, more than eight billion euros have been donated to charities, placing the organization among the top three largest donors worldwide.

The Postcode Lottery Group is now also active in other countries. Germany and the United Kingdom are still growth markets; Norway and Sweden are as mature as the Netherlands in terms of brand recognition and enthusiasm. The Postcode Lottery Group is primarily a data organization: the addresses and other data of millions of participants must be collected and stored securely. Public trust is also crucial for a lottery: people must be able to trust that the draw is fair. The Gaming Authority oversees this and expects audits and reports. The International Team Lead Security ensures adequate IT security policies in this context.
