ING is a global financial institution of Dutch origin offering banking, insurance and asset management services to meet the needs of a broad customer base. It is currently divesting the insurance activities to concentrate on its position as an international retail, direct and commercial bank.

In 2010, total income was €55bn with a net result of €3,2bn. ING employs 107.000 FTE in over 50 countries. Although it originates from a country not much bigger than a peanut on the world map, ING ranks number 18 on the list of the 20 largest financials. In short: it is huge.

Next to being huge, it has massive resources. Selling of its insurance business will provide for ample reserves for further investment, even after the full pay back of the government support received during the financial crisis of 2009. This should give you a feeling of the corporate dynamics and power that you will find in the management chambers.

Transition towards line management
S&BC is the perfect landing zone for external hires. You get unparalleled exposure to senior management in all divisions. After three years people tend to get recruited from the business for a line management position. You will find ex-S&BC consultants throughout the group, e.g. in the position of Director European Business Desk, Director Marketing Savings, Director Marketing Insurance, Director Products Insurance or Director Change Management WestlandUtrecht Bank. S&BC consultants receive extensive support from ING management development to ensure fast track career development.

Healthy work/life balance
No, it is not nine-to-five but yes, your work/life balance will improve significantly. Of course you are still expected to go the extra mile for your (internal) clients with a drive to exceed expectations by definition, but you will find there is a distinct difference in manageability with what your used to. Given the highly international domain, you are expected to travel from time to time, but typically for a couple of days and with plenty of room for individual preferences.

Driver’s seat experience
You will have your own internal network with access to data and you are ‘part of the team’. So if there is a point to make, it does not necessarily take a slide deck to do it. Next to the high impact/satisfaction scores that supports the strong internal brand of S&BC, you will be there to watch how the effect of your project work unfolds. Bottom-line results have never been so tangible.

Relevante functie-eisen

To work at a senior level in a Corporate Strategy position like this a number of years in strategy consulting is a must-have. There are openings at three levels: Senior Consultant, Project Manager and Managing Principal. You will have at least four years of consulting experience and probably no more than ten. Experience in Financial Services is not required. The issues addressed are inherent to corporate dynamics and could just as well arise in Telecom, Energy or Retail.

You are coming from a strategy consulting firm anywhere in Europe and you are determined to settle in Amsterdam for at least a couple of years. ING will be able to offer you an international career, potentially as well in your country of origin if that is not The Netherlands.

Being successful in a Corporate Strategy role requires not only the usual analytical rigor but also the charisma and personality that will win others over to join you in your vision of the future.
